How to type W with accent
Accented forms of W are not printed on most English keyboards, but every device hides a shortcut for them. Pick your platform:
Windows
- In Microsoft Word, type the hexadecimal code point of the letter — 0175 for ŵ.
- Press Alt+X: the code converts into the accented letter in place.
Tip: No accented form of W has a classic Windows Alt code. Outside Word, press Win + . to open the emoji panel and look under its Symbols tab — or copy the letter straight from this page, which is fastest of all.
Mac
- Press the Option combination for the accent — a highlighted accent mark appears, waiting.
- Type the letter w; the two combine into ẃ (and its siblings).
Tip: The press-and-hold pop-up has no accented forms of W, so the Option combinations above are the keyboard route — or copy the letter straight from this page.
iPhone & Android
- On an iPhone or iPad, press and hold the w key on the on-screen keyboard.
- A pop-up row of accented versions appears — slide your finger to the one you want and release.
- For a capital like W, tap Shift first, then press and hold the letter the same way.
Tip: The combos above come from the letter's long-press menu on the iPhone's English (US) keyboard (iOS 17+); Gboard and other Android keyboards offer similar menus, though the exact set varies. Forms missing from the pop-up (like ẉ) are quickest to copy straight from this page.
