Caron (háček) Letters

The little wedge softens and shifts consonants across Czech, Slovak, Croatian and the Baltic languages — s becomes š, z becomes ž, c becomes č, and Czech ř (as in Dvořák) is famously hard to say. It also writes Mandarin’s third tone in pinyin (ǎ). This site lists 40 letters carrying the mark — click any letter below to copy it.

How to type the caron (háček)
Every device hides a route into these letters. Pick your platform:
Windows
- Windows has no Ctrl shortcut for the caron. In Microsoft Word, type the letter’s code point and press Alt+X — the code converts in place.
- Outside Word, press Win + . and look under the emoji panel’s Symbols tab.
Tip: Each letter’s own page on this site lists its exact code point.
Mac
- Press and hold the letter key itself — the s pop-up offers š, the z pop-up ž, the c pop-up č, the e pop-up ě.
- Type the number shown under the one you want, or click it.
Tip: ř, ď, ť, ň and ľ are not in the pop-ups — use the Character Viewer (Control+Command+Space).
iPhone & Android
- Press and hold the letter on the on-screen keyboard.
- Slide to the caron form in the pop-up row and release.
Tip: iPhone and Android long-press menus both have broad caron coverage (š, ž, č, ř, ň, ě, ď, ť, ľ).
