Latin Small Letter Z with Caron · U+017E
ž is the lowercase z with a caron, the little v-shaped mark above the letter. The caron turns the z sound into the 'zh' heard in the middle of 'vision'. It is an everyday letter in the Czech, Slovak and Croatian alphabets, among others. Encoded at U+017E in the Latin Extended-A block, its capital partner is Ž. How to type ž
ž is not printed on most English keyboards, but every device hides a shortcut for it. Pick your platform:
Windows
- In Microsoft Word, type the hexadecimal code point — 017E for ž.
- Press Alt+X: the code converts into the character in place.
Tip: ž has no classic Windows Alt code. Outside Word, press Win + . to open the emoji panel and look under its Symbols tab — or copy the character straight from this page, which is fastest of all.
Mac
- Press Control + Command + Space to open the Character Viewer.
