Latin Small Letter Z with Acute · U+017A
ź is the lowercase z with an acute accent. It is a separate letter of the Polish alphabet, not just a decorated z, and it stands for a soft, hissing sound — as in the word źle (badly). Its code point is U+017A in the Latin Extended-A block, and its capital form is Ź. How to type ź
ź is not printed on most English keyboards, but every device hides a shortcut for it. Pick your platform:
Windows
- In Microsoft Word, type the hexadecimal code point — 017A for ź.
- Press Alt+X: the code converts into the character in place.
Tip: ź has no classic Windows Alt code. Outside Word, press Win + . to open the emoji panel and look under its Symbols tab — or copy the character straight from this page, which is fastest of all.
Mac
- Press the Option combination for the accent — a highlighted accent mark appears, waiting.
- Type z; the two combine into ź.
