How to type Z with accent
Accented forms of Z are not printed on most English keyboards, but every device hides a shortcut for them. Pick your platform:
Windows
- In Microsoft Word, type the hexadecimal code point of the letter — 017E for ž.
- Press Alt+X: the code converts into the accented letter in place.
Tip: No accented form of Z has a classic Windows Alt code. Outside Word, press Win + . to open the emoji panel and look under its Symbols tab — or copy the letter straight from this page, which is fastest of all.
Mac
- Press the Option combination for the accent — a highlighted accent mark appears, waiting.
- Type the letter z; the two combine into ź (and its siblings).
Tip: Easier still: press and hold the z key itself and a pop-up offers accented forms like ž ż ź — type the number shown under the one you want.
iPhone & Android
- On an iPhone or iPad, press and hold the z key on the on-screen keyboard.
- A pop-up row of accented versions appears — slide your finger to the one you want and release.
- For a capital like Z, tap Shift first, then press and hold the letter the same way.
