x diaeresis
Latin Small Letter X with Diaeresis · U+1E8D
ẍ is the lowercase x with a diaeresis, the two-dot mark also called an umlaut. It is used in some spellings of the Kurdish Kurmanji alphabet to represent a voiced guttural fricative that plain x does not cover. It is a precomposed character at code point U+1E8D in the Latin Extended Additional block, with Ẍ as its capital form. Click the tile to copy ẍ, then paste it anywhere with Ctrl+V (Windows), Cmd+V (Mac) or a long-press → Paste on a phone.

How to type ẍ
ẍ is not printed on most English keyboards, but every device hides a shortcut for it. Pick your platform:
Windows
- In Microsoft Word, type the hexadecimal code point — 1E8D for ẍ.
- Press Alt+X: the code converts into the character in place.
Tip: ẍ has no classic Windows Alt code. Outside Word, press Win + . to open the emoji panel and look under its Symbols tab — or copy the character straight from this page, which is fastest of all.
Mac
- Press the Option combination for the accent — a highlighted accent mark appears, waiting.
- Type x; the two combine into ẍ.
Tip: The press-and-hold pop-up has no shortcut for this exact form, so the Option combination above is the keyboard route — or copy the character straight from this page.
iPhone & Android
- Long-press pop-ups on iPhone, iPad and Android don't cover ẍ.
- Fastest route on a phone: tap the big ẍ tile above to copy it, then long-press the text field and choose Paste.
Tip: Copying from this page works on every phone — no keyboard settings needed.
Copy-paste is a typing method too — every accented form of X copies in one click on the X with accent page, alongside the full typing guides.
