Latin Small Letter I with Diaeresis · U+00EF
ï is the letter i with a diaeresis, the two dots placed above it. The mark signals that the vowel is pronounced separately from the one before it, as in the French words naïf and maïs. It appears mainly in French and a few other European languages. Its capital form is Ï (U+00CF), and its code point is U+00EF. Click the tile to copy ï, then paste it anywhere with Ctrl+V (Windows), Cmd+V (Mac) or a long-press → Paste on a phone.

How to type ï
ï is not printed on most English keyboards, but every device hides a shortcut for it. Pick your platform:
Windows
- Turn on Num Lock so the numeric keypad produces digits.
- Hold Alt, type 0239 on the numeric keypad, then release Alt — ï appears at the cursor.
Tip: No numeric keypad? Press Win + . for the emoji panel (Symbols tab), or copy the character straight from this page.
Mac
- Press the Option combination for the accent — a highlighted accent mark appears, waiting.
- Type i; the two combine into ï.
Tip: Easier still: press and hold the i key itself and a pop-up offers ï — type the number shown under it.
iPhone & Android
- On an iPhone or iPad, press and hold the i key on the on-screen keyboard.
- A pop-up row of accented versions appears — slide your finger to ï and release.
Tip: The pop-up row comes from the letter’s long-press menu on the iPhone’s English (US) keyboard (iOS 17+); Gboard and other Android keyboards offer similar menus, though the exact set varies.
Copy-paste is a typing method too — every accented form of I copies in one click on the I with accent page, alongside the full typing guides.
Customize ï
Style the symbol your way — pick colors, size and shape, then copy the HTML snippet or download a square PNG/SVG (transparent background supported).
