Ā is the capital letter A with a macron, the horizontal line that marks a long vowel. It belongs to the alphabet in Latvian and Māori, and in Hanyu Pinyin it writes the first (high level) tone of Mandarin Chinese on a capital A. Its code point is U+0100, and its lowercase form is ā. How to type Ā
Ā is not printed on most English keyboards, but every device hides a shortcut for it. Pick your platform:
Windows
- In Microsoft Word, type the hexadecimal code point — 0100 for Ā.
- Press Alt+X: the code converts into the character in place.
