È is the capital E with a grave accent. French uses it where a word with è is capitalized, and Italian writes it too, often for end-of-word stress. In Hanyu Pinyin È marks Mandarin's fourth tone on E. Its code point is U+00C8, its Windows Alt code is Alt+0200, and its small form is è (U+00E8). How to type È
È is not printed on most English keyboards, but every device hides a shortcut for it. Pick your platform:
Windows
- Turn on Num Lock so the numeric keypad produces digits.
- Hold Alt, type 0200 on the numeric keypad, then release Alt — È appears at the cursor.
