Latin Small Letter E with Grave · U+00E8
è is the small letter e with a grave accent. French uses it in words like très and mère, and Italian writes it too, often for end-of-word stress. In Hanyu Pinyin it marks Mandarin's fourth tone on e. Its code point is U+00E8, its Windows Alt code is Alt+0232, and its capital form is È (U+00C8). Click the tile to copy è, then paste it anywhere with Ctrl+V (Windows), Cmd+V (Mac) or a long-press → Paste on a phone.

How to type è
è is not printed on most English keyboards, but every device hides a shortcut for it. Pick your platform:
Windows
- Turn on Num Lock so the numeric keypad produces digits.
- Hold Alt, type 0232 on the numeric keypad, then release Alt — è appears at the cursor.
Tip: No numeric keypad? Press Win + . for the emoji panel (Symbols tab), or copy the character straight from this page.
Mac
- Press the Option combination for the accent — a highlighted accent mark appears, waiting.
- Type e; the two combine into è.
Tip: Easier still: press and hold the e key itself and a pop-up offers è — type the number shown under it.
iPhone & Android
- On an iPhone or iPad, press and hold the e key on the on-screen keyboard.
- A pop-up row of accented versions appears — slide your finger to è and release.
Tip: The pop-up row comes from the letter’s long-press menu on the iPhone’s English (US) keyboard (iOS 17+); Gboard and other Android keyboards offer similar menus, though the exact set varies.
Copy-paste is a typing method too — every accented form of E copies in one click on the E with accent page, alongside the full typing guides.
