u diaeresis

Latin Small Letter U with Diaeresis · U+00FC

ü is the small letter u with a diaeresis. In German it is the umlaut ü, a distinct vowel sound, and Turkish uses it the same way. In Spanish the diaeresis instead shows that the u is pronounced, as in pingüino. It sits at code point U+00FC; its capital is Ü (U+00DC). Click the tile to copy ü, then paste it anywhere with Ctrl+V (Windows), Cmd+V (Mac) or a long-press → Paste on a phone.

How to type ü

ü is not printed on most English keyboards, but every device hides a shortcut for it. Pick your platform:

Windows

ü

  1. Turn on Num Lock so the numeric keypad produces digits.
  2. Hold Alt, type 0252 on the numeric keypad, then release Alt — ü appears at the cursor.

Tip: No numeric keypad? Press Win + . for the emoji panel (Symbols tab), or copy the character straight from this page.

Mac

ü
OptionUthenu
  1. Press the Option combination for the accent — a highlighted accent mark appears, waiting.
  2. Type u; the two combine into ü.

Tip: Easier still: press and hold the u key itself and a pop-up offers ü — type the number shown under it.

iPhone & Android

ü
upress & hold
  1. On an iPhone or iPad, press and hold the u key on the on-screen keyboard.
  2. A pop-up row of accented versions appears — slide your finger to ü and release.

Tip: The pop-up row comes from the letter’s long-press menu on the iPhone’s English (US) keyboard (iOS 17+); Gboard and other Android keyboards offer similar menus, though the exact set varies.

Copy-paste is a typing method too — every accented form of U copies in one click on the U with accent page, alongside the full typing guides.

Customize ü

Style the symbol your way — pick colors, size and shape, then copy the HTML snippet or download a square PNG/SVG (transparent background supported).
