y circumflex
Latin Small Letter Y with Circumflex · U+0177
ŷ is the lowercase y with a circumflex, the pointed “hat” accent. It belongs to the Welsh alphabet, where the circumflex marks a long vowel, so ŷ is treated as a letter in its own right rather than plain y. Its capital form is Ŷ (U+0176). Click the tile to copy ŷ, then paste it anywhere with Ctrl+V (Windows), Cmd+V (Mac) or a long-press → Paste on a phone.

How to type ŷ
ŷ is not printed on most English keyboards, but every device hides a shortcut for it. Pick your platform:
Windows
- In Microsoft Word, type the hexadecimal code point — 0177 for ŷ.
- Press Alt+X: the code converts into the character in place.
Tip: ŷ has no classic Windows Alt code. Outside Word, press Win + . to open the emoji panel and look under its Symbols tab — or copy the character straight from this page, which is fastest of all.
Mac
- Press the Option combination for the accent — a highlighted accent mark appears, waiting.
- Type y; the two combine into ŷ.
Tip: The press-and-hold pop-up has no shortcut for this exact form, so the Option combination above is the keyboard route — or copy the character straight from this page.
iPhone & Android
- On an iPhone or iPad, press and hold the y key on the on-screen keyboard.
- A pop-up row of accented versions appears — slide your finger to ŷ and release.
Tip: The pop-up row comes from the letter’s long-press menu on the iPhone’s English (US) keyboard (iOS 17+); Gboard and other Android keyboards offer similar menus, though the exact set varies.
Copy-paste is a typing method too — every accented form of Y copies in one click on the Y with accent page, alongside the full typing guides.
