o diaeresis

Latin Small Letter O with Diaeresis · U+00F6

ö is the lowercase o with a diaeresis, the two dots above the letter. In German it is the umlaut that changes the vowel sound, as in schön, and it is a separate alphabet letter in Swedish and Finnish. Turkish and Hungarian also use it for a front rounded vowel. Its capital form is Ö (U+00D6). Click the tile to copy ö, then paste it anywhere with Ctrl+V (Windows), Cmd+V (Mac) or a long-press → Paste on a phone.

How to type ö

Windows

ö

  1. Turn on Num Lock so the numeric keypad produces digits.
  2. Hold Alt, type 0246 on the numeric keypad, then release Alt — ö appears at the cursor.

Tip: No numeric keypad? Press Win + . for the emoji panel (Symbols tab), or copy the character straight from this page.

Mac

ö
OptionUtheno
  1. Press the Option combination for the accent — a highlighted accent mark appears, waiting.
  2. Type o; the two combine into ö.

Tip: Easier still: press and hold the o key itself and a pop-up offers ö — type the number shown under it.

iPhone & Android

ö
opress & hold
  1. On an iPhone or iPad, press and hold the o key on the on-screen keyboard.
  2. A pop-up row of accented versions appears — slide your finger to ö and release.

Tip: The pop-up row comes from the letter’s long-press menu on the iPhone’s English (US) keyboard (iOS 17+); Gboard and other Android keyboards offer similar menus, though the exact set varies.

Copy-paste is a typing method too — every accented form of O copies in one click on the O with accent page, alongside the full typing guides.
